dedicated staff give you some direction and provide a better understanding
on how to find the right road to recovery.
Drugs, what are they?
Addicts use drugs and/or alcohol to change the way they feel; often times
they are used as a coping tool when things in the addicts life become
too overwhelming they will escape into drug use. Drugs are substances
that when taken have the ability to alter the persons mood, chemical
balance of the brain and the addicts perception of reality. If too
much of a drug is ingested it has the potential to produce unwanted
and/or dangerous side affects. The facts are that overdoses occur everyday
and drugs kill. There are some drugs that are taken out of necessity,
these drugs are used to supply the body with substances the body no longer
produces. Drugs, if taken to excess, can lead to physical as well as
emotional or physiological dependency.
Addiction, what constitutes addiction?
There is a lot of controversy as to whether a person is genetically or
biochemically predisposed to addiction or alcoholism, this is a subject
that has been debated for years within the rehabilitation and scientific
community. The "disease concept" is one school of thought,
embracing the idea that addiction is a disease that is inherited, "it
runs in our family," is a common belief.
Addiction is a learned behavior, no one ever intends on becoming an
addict, it is a consequence of drug and/or alcohol use. There is an invisible
line, that when crossed is hard to get back to the other side. There
are good drug and/or alcohol treatment centers that can help end the
cycle of addictive behaviors and can rehabilitate a person giving them
tools to manage their lives with the use of mind altering substances.
How Do Drugs Affect The Mind?
The mind is our most important tool, we use it we solve the problems
we face in life and to make decisions that are pro-survival. Drugs
do several things that harm one’s ability to be fully aware of
the present surroundings or to think clearly. Just because a person
stops using drugs and/or alcohol does not mean the side effects of
the drugs stop.
There are no absolutes with addiction and there are many different opinions
on how to treat addiction. On a national average only 16% to 20% of people
who are addicted, regardless of the drug, "recover". |
